The Elbe Valley Dunes near Klein Schmölen are a unique natural phenomenon in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, about 100 kilometers from the sea. They were formed around 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age and today form the largest inland shifting dune in Europe – up to 42 meters high and about two kilometers long. On the nutrient-poor, dry sandy areas, you will find rare plants and animals, including endangered insect species and the sand sedge.

The dunes are located on the edge of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which, with its near-natural floodplain landscape, offers great opportunities for nature experiences and relaxation.

Around 12,000 years ago, storms blew the valley sands brought by glacial meltwater into high dunes or created flat drifting sand fields, some of which are now reforested or covered with lichens, mosses, sand sedge, and marram grass.

This enormous inland shifting dune attracts attention even from afar. It rises more than 30 meters above the level of the floodplain and reaches a length of approximately 2 kilometers and a width of 600 meters. At its highest point, 42 meters above sea level, visitors are greeted with a magnificent view of the Löcknitz lowlands, the expanse of the Lenzener Wische, and the areas of Lower Saxony beyond the Elbe.

Until the 1970s, the dunes were inaccessible due to the restricted area on the Elbe. In recent years, parking spaces have been created and information boards have been erected at the initiative of the nature park administration.

A beautiful dune located directly on the Elbe with a wide view over the Elbe valley.
