The largest inland dune in Europe, so to speak, Baltic Sea sand on the Elbe. You should take some time to learn about history, plants and animals during a walk on the nature trail. At the same time you have a wonderful view.

The inland dune Klein Schmölen is the largest inland shifting dune in Europe.
From the dune you have a beautiful view over the Mecklenburg Elbtalaue in the direction of Brandenburg and over the Elbe to Lower Saxony.

There are not many natural elevations in the Elbtalaue, which should definitely please cyclists. The sight of the inland dunes near Klein Schmölen near Dömitz, which can be seen from afar from the Elbuferstraße, is all the more interesting.

The largest inland dune in Europe rises impressively on the edge of the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park. From its highest point, around 42 meters above sea level, the visitor has a wonderful view over the Löcknitz lowlands in Mecklenburg, the Lenzener Wische in Brandenburg and the Elbe foreland on the Lower Saxony side. The fascinating complex of dunes, a good two kilometers long, was formed at the end of the last ice age, around 12,000 years ago.
Special climatic and very different soil conditions have led to the fact that an extremely diverse flora was able to develop here, which in turn is a habitat for rare and protected species of birds and insects. The dunes can be walked through on designated paths, information boards along the way provide information about the special features of the geological formation. Guided tours are also offered regularly.
