In the "Cities dare wilderness" project, various areas in the city of Hanover were selected where wilderness has been allowed to develop since 2016. The wilderness areas are easily recognizable by the three meter high wooden pillars on which the "wilderness isopods" watch over the urban nature. The orange and red animals are the mascots of the Hanoverian project. The Eilenriede has been managed and cared for in a natural way by the municipal forestry company for many years. Interesting for the project are the former depot and the associated old composting area in the front Eilenriede and a plot of natural forest in the southern Eilenriede. No measures are taken on any forest areas, as the focus is on free forest development.

Wilderness is possible almost everywhere. When people withdraw, nature takes over – even in the middle of a big city. What emerges are unusual images of the urban landscape.

No one can predict exactly how nature will develop in the midst of a man-made environment. In the “Cities Dare Wilderness” project, Hanover, Frankfurt am Main and Dessau-Roßlau rose to the challenge and dared more wilderness together. Our project was funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
