The district of Schaumburg reunites roughly the historic medieval country of Grafschaft Schaumburg. This was divided in 1647 between the Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel, the Counts of Lippe and the Duchy of Calenberg. From the Hessian part of the county of Schaumburg, which came to the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau in 1866, then as the county of Grafschaft Schaumburg (with the district town of Rinteln) and was assigned to the province of Hanover in 1932 as part of an administrative reform within Prussia.
