Bats have also taken up residence here and can be observed at the right time. The mining working group in the Wendthagen-Ehlen tourist office set up an information center on the local issues of mining, nature conservation and wildlife at the entrance building to the former brake shaft 7 in cooperation with the district. The bats living in the shaft form a focus.
So-called brake shafts were built in the coal mining area east of Obernkirchen in the course of the development of new mining areas starting from the Liethstollen Obernkirchen in the first half of the 20th century. The forest area rises towards Wendthagen. Lorries that transported the mined coal to the Liethstollen - the briquette factory was located in the vicinity - rolled downhill underground. Steel ropes, wound on reels, controlled the speed and slowed the carts. The reels were stationed in the brake shafts.
