The Bärenloch is the most enchanted place within the city of Chur - and at the same time the best preserved part of the old town. It is uncertain where the name Bärenloch for the two inner courtyards between Arcas-Platz and Kirchgasse comes from - but it still seems apt. In old documents, however, the dark bear hole is still called «curschellas». This late Latin expression simply means "small courtyards". The two courtyards still seem small and cramped today - making the Bärenloch a good example of the living situation in late medieval Chur.
