The Renaissance building, with its late-Gothic windows and round-arched staggered gable, houses the furnished study and death room of Philipp Melanchthon, where he and his family lived. Since 1954 the house has served as a museum where Philipp Melanchthon's life and work are made accessible to the public. In the process, images, prints and manuscripts by Melanchthon and his contemporaries are shown in a building-retaining authenticity. Since 1996, the Melanchthonhaus as part of the Reformation sites of Lutherstadt Wittenbergs World Heritage Site by UNESCO.When Melanchthon threatened to move out of Wittenberg in 1536, he was built at the expense of the Elector Johann Friedrich I, the Magnanimous, and the university, the new three-storey scholar's house with the large adjoining garden. This moved him to stay in Wittenberg in 1537, as the property raised him to the status of a full citizen with the associated rights and the house already had 1556 due to the connection to the Röhrwassersystem running water.Source:

Philipp Melanchthon was one of the most important collaborators of Martin Luther for the dissemination of the church political Reformation. After Melanchthon several houses (also churches) were named in many cities of Germany, among other things. in Jena, Karlsruhe and Mannheim.

The house was built in the Renaissance style. Today there is an exhibition about Luther's fellow campaigner Melanchthon.
