The Fatima Madonna was made in Brazil and is believed to be ceramic or porcelain. It indicates that the first kaolin was found nearby, marking the beginning of the porcelain industry in the area.

Pope John Paul II has attributed his survival of the assassination attempt on him that took place on May 13 – the commemoration of the first apparition of Mary in Fatima – to Our Lady there. The bullet that nearly killed him was later incorporated into the crown of the statue of Mary at Fatima.
