Nice chapel, romantically situated at the edge of the forest and in the bay.

The chapel on Lake Braies, built in 1904 and dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, received a visit from the heir to the throne shortly before the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Towards the end of World War II, it served as a refuge for 136 prominent prisoners whom Hitler had brought here from the Dachau concentration camp. Among them were Prince Philipp of Hesse, members of the Stauffenberg family, and Dr. Kurt von Schuschnigg. On May 1, 1945, the prisoners were liberated and flown to Sicily a few days later, from where they returned home.

Built in 1904, this private chapel stands on the shore almost at the end of the lake's path. The church was part of one of the last events of World War II: 137 political prisoners were rounded up from concentration camps in Germany on the orders of the SS commander, who hoped to trade them for his safety. The exchange took place at the Hotel Pragser Wildsee, on the shores of the lake, and the liberated prisoners bathed in the chapel.
