The old Wilhelmsburg town hall was located in this building from the early days of 1903. Today the seat of the district office of Hamburg Mitte.

The town hall was built in 1903 (inaugurated on November 28, 1903) with the aim of founding a new center of the district - but the planned residential area around the town hall never became a reality. Instead, there are now beautiful green spaces with the Rathauspark and Inselpark.

The Wilhelmsburg Rathausviertel (until 2016 Dratelnstraße) is the name of an urban development area in Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg district. 1,600 residential units and 29,000 m² GFA commercial space are to be realized on 32 hectares. The Wilhelmsburg town hall district is within walking distance to the Wilhelmsburg S-Bahn station, the Inselpark Wilhelmsburg and the Wilhelmsburg town hall. In the north it connects to the new Elbinselquartier residential area, which is also being developed by IBA Hamburg GmbH. In 2013, parts of the area were used as parking spaces for the International Garden Show igs 2013. There are also a few commercial businesses and two football pitches here. The urban and open space planning concept for the quarter was created by DeZwarteHond and RMP Stephan Lenzen landscape architects, who won the “Housing for everyone – in the middle of Wilhelmsburg” competition at the end of 2015. The competition was carried out by the IBA Hamburg GmbH in cooperation with the Hamburg-Mitte district office and the Hamburg authority for urban development and housing. A special feature of the process was the participation of citizens with an upstream participation process in cooperation with the initiative "Perspectives! Planning together for the Elbe Islands” and the Wilhelmsburg District Development Advisory Board. The wishes of the public were included in the task of the competition, the award. As part of a so-called "transparent workshop", interested parties could later discuss their suggestions directly with the planning architects and urban planners.
