The reactivation of the historic Heidekrautbahn main line will provide rail access to another northern residential area. At the same time, recreational travelers will be able to quickly reach popular destinations such as Wandlitzsee and the Schorfheide. As part of the i2030 infrastructure program, eight new stations are to be built along the approximately 14-kilometer-long route.

The starting point is Wilhelmsruh station, where the building permit, known in technical jargon as the "planning approval decision," has already been obtained. A new platform for the Heidekrautbahn will be built on a railway embankment next to the S-Bahn station. The previous station was located in a similar location, but at street level. The visualizations show what the new Wilhelmsruh station will look like in the future.

Work began in November 2024 and is expected to continue until the end of 2025. A current construction report is available at i2030.de/reaktivierung-der-stammstrecke-der-heidekrautbahn-arbeiten-am-bahnhof-wilhelmsruh-nehmen-fahrt-auf. Preparatory measures for construction, such as clearing the construction site, clearing the area, and rerouting the Wall Cycle Path, which is very popular with day-trippers, were already completed in 2021. More information on the Heidekrautbahn reactivation project can be found at i2030.de/nord.

Berlin-Wilhelmsruh station, formerly Reinickendorf (Rosenthaler Straße) and Reinickendorf-Rosenthal, is a station on the Berlin Northern Railway. It is located in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf in the district of the same name on the border with the district of Wilhelmsruh, which today belongs to the district of Pankow. The next station to the north is Wittenau (Wilhelmsruher Damm), the next station to the south is Schönholz station.

The station of the Reinickendorf-Liebenwalde-Groß Schönebeck railway, later the Niederbarnimer railway, was opened on May 21, 1901 to the north-east of the station of the Northern Railway, and thus in the area of the Wilhelmsruh district in the district of Pankow. It was the Berlin terminus of the Heidekrautbahn.

Today the station is only served by the trains of the Berlin S-Bahn.

nice old train station. The S-Bahn lines S 1 (Wannsee - Oranienburg) and S 26 (Teltow Stadt - Waidmannslust) stop here. Former start and end station of the "Heidekrautbahn", which is now being rebuilt.

The colloquially common name Heidekrautbahn is based on the fact that many Berlin used the train to excursions in the Schorfheide and the end point of the route, the village Groß Schönebeck, is considered the gateway to the Schorfheide.

The starting point of the Heidekrautbahn was the Berlin-Wilhelmsruh station. With the construction of the Berlin Wall, the station was closed and tracks in this area mined. A section of the road to the Pankow plant of the Stadler Rail, formerly the seat of a plant of the Bergmann-Borsig company, has been preserved. From here there is still occasional freight traffic. The route continues along the border of the district of Pankow to the district of Reinickendorf, past the Märkisches Viertel. From here there are occasional special trips on the route. The heather path continues north, later north-east, via Berlin-Blankenfelde, Schildow, Mühlenbeck to Schönwalde. North of the local station opens a connecting link built in 1950 from Berlin-Karow station over which the places on the heather are now connected with Berlin.

In the Basdorf station, the heather path branches into two branches.

The western branch with the stations Zühlsdorf (in operation), Wensickendorf (in operation), Zehlendorf (trial from April 16 to December 31, 2007 in operation), Kreuzbruch and sand mountains originally led to Liebenwalde and is since December 1, 1997 only still in operation until Wensickendorf. To Wensickendorf runs every hour a train, in 2007 there were short trains with caster to Zehlendorf. At weekends, the trains branch off in Wensickendorf on the goods outer ring and continue to the breakpoint Schmachtenhagen.

Towards the northeast, the route leads to Groß Schönebeck via the stations Wandlitz, Wandlitzsee, Klosterfelde, Lottschesee, Ruhlsdorf-Zerpenschleuse and Klandorf. Until Klosterfelde it is served every hour until Groß Schönebeck every two hours.

In the near future, the main line of the Berlin Heidekrautbahn will be reactivated. In the first step, the structures between Brandenburg and Wilhelmsruh will be updated or rebuilt. The planning approval procedure for this area is currently underway, “so that implementation can take place promptly”, as stated in the Senate response to a question from MP Torsten Hofer (SPD).

The station opened on July 10, 1877, under the name Rosenthal Station and served the development of the town of Rosenthal. It was initially a very simple request stop for suburban traffic between Gesundbrunnen and Oranienburg. At that time, this was called "omnibus service."

Due to the growth of suburban traffic, the single-track Northern Railway within the Berlin metropolitan area increasingly became a bottleneck. Between 1887 and 1888, the KED (Royal Railway Directorate) of Berlin established new crossing stations for operational purposes only: at Reinickendorf (Rosenthaler Straße).

By the timetable change on June 1, 1891, the Northern Railway between Gesundbrunnen and Oranienburg had been double-tracked. At that time, the station was called Reinickendorf (Rosenthaler Straße).

Actually, it was a completely normal and inconspicuous S-Bahn station, like many in Berlin. Something very special for me. Growing up in Wilhelmsruh, I was never able to enter the station, which bears the name of my hometown, until 1989. The town and the station were separated by this Stalinist construction, which called itself the "anti-fascist protective wall."
