Meanwhile, the Berlin Senate is examining whether to put the "Heidekrautbahn" back into operation. When the Wall was built in 1961, the main line of the Heidekrautbahn to Wilhelmsruh was interrupted and led to Berlin via Karow. With the current reactivation of the rail connection, the original start and end station of the Heidekrautbahn (Berlin-Wilhelmsruh) will be reached again. An extension from Wilhelmsruh to Gesundbrunnen is planned in a second step.

Put into operation in 1901, the Heidekrautbahn ran from Berlin-Wilhelmsruh via Blankenfelde, Schildow, Mühlenbeck and Schönwalde to Basdorf, where it branches off. With the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Wilhelmsruh station was closed and the line in this area was dismantled.
