The southern Charles Bridge, also known as the Upper Charles Bridge, connects the Flea Market Island with the Lorenzer Altstadt (Old Town) south of the Pegnitz River. The current sandstone arch bridge was built in 1728.In honor of the then Emperor Charles VI and his wife Elisabeth, the structure was originally called the Kaiserbrücke (Emperor's Bridge) or Elisabethbrücke (Elizabeth Bridge). Two obelisks are placed in the center of the bridge. The eastern one is crowned by a war or imperial eagle with outstretched wings, the western one by a dove of peace with folded wings and an olive branch in its beak.
