Mungrisdale Common Summit Cairn

Recommended by 42 hikers out of 48

Mungrisdale Common has a tough gig. On account of its perceived lack of charisma, many consider it the least interesting Wainwright fell, including the great man himself. Indeed, hikes to Mungrisdale Common are often boggy underfoot and something of a trudge.

It also doesn’t feel like the summit of a fell. The gradual nature of its slopes simply give it the character of a lonely spot on the high, grassy land around the back of mighty Blencathra.

I'm loathed to put a komoot highlight on for this somewhat controversial fell... as most peak baggers question why Alfred Wainwright chose to include this bog-fest in his Northern Fells guidebook.

I do find the view down to Derwent Water absolutely beautiful though so there is one redeeming quality to this otherwise wet trudge across soft, spongey ground. Unless you visit when the ground is completely frozen or right in the middle of a heat wave, prepare to get wet feet!
A very strange fell for Alfred Wainwright to add to his 214. Very boggy and just flat and boring. It has nice views to Derwent and on a clear day you can see the surrounding fells but I think the worse one of the Wainwright's.

Unless you come with good waterproof boots - don't even think about entering this very flat top ... This is bog at its best...
