From 1630, Jews from Germany came to the border town of Nieuweschans to settle there. It took a long time before they had access to a synagogue: in 1811.
From the beginning of the twentieth century, the number of Jewish residents declined, so that after 1925 the building could no longer serve as a synagogue. During the Second World War, all but two of the Jewish residents of the municipality were deported and murdered by the Germans. To commemorate them, a plaque has been placed on the wall of the synagogue.
