SNAKE HOUSE
The way people used to live in the Werdenberg region is presented in the Schlangenhaus Museum, where you can experience it up close. From the first signs of settlement to the emerging interest in this unique medieval wooden settlement in the 1960s, the Schlangenhaus covers the past and the present.
The Glarus governors left, the canton of St. Gallen came, but before that the French settled in the town. Whether voluntarily or forced by the authorities: people emigrated - as mercenaries to war, as settlers in East Prussia, as farm workers to the coffee plantations of Santo Domingo. Around 1880, home embroidery brought a new source of income to Werdenberg households, which kept parents and children busy late into the night. The embroidery crises followed, and many people became impoverished.
The Schlangenhaus, whose stone corner was part of the town wall, invites you to explore its history for yourself. Visit the exhibition, which brings Werdenberg's history to life with many audio tracks and vivid details.
