On Epiphany 1717, an unexplained death terrified the inhabitants of the Ostertal. Two men lost sight of each other on their way home from St. Wendel. Only one of the two arrived in Bubach. Supported by the surrounding villages, the Bubach people spent several days looking for the missing tanner.
