In 1440, the Archbishop of Trier, Jakob I von Sierck, donated a "Kaff" (square west of the church) to the parish of St. Wendel with the condition that a "common hall and kauffheyß" be built on the square to protect the trade goods from rain and storms. This later became the first town hall. This significantly improved the value of this square, which had previously been a market place for a long time. The street was named after what was offered for sale there = fruit market.
