The basilica in St. Wendel, sometimes also referred to as the cathedral, is one of the most beautiful and important religious buildings in Saarland. It bears the name of Wendalinus, who worked in the area of St. Wendel in the 5th century. He is the most famous saint in Saarland and is buried here.
The construction of the basilica began in the 14th century. In 1753, the two small Gothic towers were supplemented by a stately baroque central tower (onion dome). This is 69 m high, the central nave 17 m high. The length of the basilica is 52 m. Behind the altar is the high grave (tumba) with the bones of St. Wendelin. It was built around 1500. On the bronze gravestone, created in 1924 by the sculptor Georg Busch, the saint is depicted surrounded by sheep.
From the basilica, a 15-kilometer-long pilgrimage route leads to the abbey of Tholey, where, according to legend, Saint Wendelin is said to have served as abbot.
