The slow road is a very quiet walking path that runs over the historic Gaendijk.
This dike is an example of how man was pushed back the Scheldt into an increasingly narrow area of the valley. Building dikes was the solution to the perpetual struggle with the rising water.
The underlying polder landscape was created by building dikes.
The oldest dikes in Moerzeke were mentioned as early as the 13th century.
In the following centuries, these polders expanded further and further.
New parts of the river valley were thus reclaimed, a process that continued into the 17th century.
In the Interbellum, for example, as a result of the dike breach in 1928, the Koning Albertdijk was still constructed.
Today, the Sigma Plan is being worked out in various places throughout the Scheldt region.
    Sigmaplan ensures controlled flood areas.
People, animals and nature benefit from this.

The Gaendijk is the first dike, gaandijk later gaudijk, built in the 13th century under the leadership of the lord of Moerzeke. This dike formed 'the' connection between Moerzeke and Kastel. The region of Moerzeke/Kastel was then a low-lying marshland that flooded twice a year due to tidal action. Dikes were built through the marshes that were always dry and thus formed gangways.
