The oldest finds from a hunting camp come from Bruchsberg near Königsaue, about five kilometers from the city of Aschersleben, and date back more than 55,800 years.
In the 11th century, the city passed into the possession of the Ascanians, whose name comes from Ascania or Ascharia, the Latinized form of the city of Aschersleben.
In the 12th century, Bernhard founded the Ascanian county of Aschersleben within the Principality of Anhalt, after which the town became the county seat, administrative and court venue.
The importance of the place now grew, a farming village became a small town, and so Henry II of Anhalt granted Aschersleben its town charter in 1266.
In December 1316 Bishop Albrecht I of Halberstadt enfeoffed his brother, Count Bernhard II of Anhalt-Bernburg, with the house and town of Aschersleben.
Work on erecting the city fortifications began in 1322 after Elisabeth, the widow of the last Count of Aschersleber, had given permission for this.
