Memories can be very powerful. For a long time, the empty, huge building of the former Bestehornsche paper and cardboard factory, later VEB Optima, shaped the image of Aschersleben.

The city had tried in vain to find uses for the building, which is important for urban development.

      A demolition was also discussed.

The IBA Stadtumbau 2010 gave shape to the idea of an educational center, and a Europe-wide competition made it concrete.

The Stuttgart architects Lederer + Ragnarsdóttier + Oei won in 2005. A stroke of luck for the city.

The extensive and technically remarkable renovation means that the large, listed old building is surprisingly bright and cheerful in the street space, a circumstance that the long, lime-coated brick building of the right-angled wing is happy to carry on.

With its two-storey structure, it seems to draw the monumental size of the 'Heckner giant' into the remarkably landscaped area of the campus - incidentally an integral part of the state garden show held at the same time as the IBA - and thus make it more pleasing to the viewer.

The roof landscape of the supplementary building is reminiscent of sheds in industrial buildings. The eye-catcher on the gable is the vertical row of curved 'smiling' balconies.

The architects have opened up the formerly gloomy factory floors, where secondary and vocational school students now study together, for a bright, slightly sober atrium that floods the corridors and a newly created entrance area with light.

A band of dark blue glazed tiles runs along the gallery corridors, in the foyer they also cover long wall benches.

It is the clear lines, this reduction to the essentials, that reveal parallels to Scandinavian models.

The 'compelling architectural concept' and the unmistakable 'feeling for educational buildings, for pedagogical requirements and concepts as well as for the needs of pupils' were decisive for a shortlist for the Architecture Prize of the State of Saxony-Anhalt 2010.
