Wildemann was founded in 1529 by miners from the Ore Mountains. They were commissioned to restart mining in the Harz Mountains on a larger scale for the Welf dukes. According to legend, as they advanced into the inhospitable Innerste valley, they spotted a wild man living with a wild woman. His tracks were right where the largest ore deposits were. Attempts to catch him failed. He also did not respond to calls. Finally, he was shot with arrows, which injured him so much that he was captured. In captivity, he did not speak and could not be persuaded to work; he only seemed to be interested in the ore deposits. When it was decided to bring him before the duke, he died of his gunshot wounds. At the place where the wild man had been captured, large silver deposits were found and Wildemann was founded there.

The founding of Wildemann in 1529 was followed 5 years later by the appointment as a mountain town with all its mountain freedoms. Wildemann is the smallest of the seven formerly free mountain towns.

It's a nice little town, some of the houses are empty and could use some paint.
