Saint John the Baptist (also John Baptist), to whom this Bruchhausen church is dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. His parents are Zacharias and Elisabeth. After the announcement of God's incarnation, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in her old age, John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan. Jesus also comes there to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends on him from heaven.
The memorial day of John the Baptist (Baptist) in the saints' calendar is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Holy Eve'.

"... The parish church of St. Johann Baptist in Bruchhausen is one of the most attractive architectural monuments in the Rhineland. A "Marian chapel" is mentioned in documents in the Erpel parish archive as early as 1025 and 1094. A three-aisled, flat-roofed chapel was built around the year 1230 A pillar basilica was built, of which the west tower and parts of the long walls are still preserved today. In the late Gothic period, a new choir with a rich net vault was added. The windows were enlarged in keeping with the style and designed with fish bladder tracery. In a further construction phase in 1682, a porch was added to the south aisle (today the baptismal chapel). The tower does not stand in the main axis of the central nave, but is offset to the south on the nave wall. Its ground floor is open towards the central and northern aisle in pointed arches on strong corner pillars and is spanned by a late Gothic cross vault on fluted ribs .

On the outside, the tower is divided into three floors, which are set off with pilaster strips and arched friezes. Inside the church contains a number of treasures. First of all, the quatrefoil-shaped keystones from the 16th century should be mentioned here, as well as the consoles of the vault ribs in the side aisles, from which semi-sculptural busts of apostles, saints and doctors of the church are spread out, which are notable for their sculptural quality that is outstanding for the Middle Ages. On the north wall of the choir there are two late Gothic sacrament niches, the smaller of which is decorated with the von Renneberg coat of arms next to the sacristy door, while the larger one in the gable has a beautiful fish bladder motif. On the left side altar there is a standing Madonna made of limestone with a polychrome setting. It is attributed to the master of the Carmelite Madonna in Mainz (beginning of the 15th century). She was worshiped as the “comforter of the afflicted” until 1745. Another Madonna, a work of the highest quality from the 14th century, miraculously became the focus of Marian veneration and pilgrimage activity, which continues to this day. ..."
