From the Bruchhausen parking lot, the hike led us up to the "Eye of God," located at a small chapel in the forest. This is a classic symbol often used in Freemason circles, but as far as I know, this chapel (or wayside shrine) in the forest has no connection to this.

According to a widespread legend, the glaring sun appeared as an eye at this point to a lord of the castle from nearby Bruchhausen, who was considered violent and ruthless, and prevented him from shooting a hind. After this apparition, the lord of the castle committed suicide, so that the farmers subject to him were released and built the wayside shrine as a thank you.

The wayside shrine was built between 1870 and 1880 by the innkeeper Johann Wilhelm Menden and was erected as a warning to all thieves. God's providential eye, the all-seeing eye that sees no sin!
