The history of St. Michael's Church in Heiligenfeld is surrounded by many anecdotes. One of them is still told today in Heiligenfelde and the surrounding area. Accordingly, on July 17, 1889, after the church was struck by lightning, the master baker Alwin Wilhelm is said to have knocked out the flames from the burning spire with his cap alone. The story about the possible financing of demolishing and rebuilding the church in the 19th century also gives cause for a smile. “The financing will be available if we save the pastor!” However, this solution was abandoned at the time.
