The history of St. Michael's Church in Heiligenfeld is surrounded by many anecdotes. One of them is still told today in Heiligenfelde and the surrounding area. Accordingly, on July 17, 1889, after the church was struck by lightning, the master baker Alwin Wilhelm is said to have knocked out the flames from the burning spire with his cap alone.
