The former RIJKS HOOGERE CITIZENSCHOOL, founded in 1909-1910, was designed by government architect J. Vrijman, 'Government architect for educational buildings, etc.'. The building, constructed in a very careful and traditional Transitional style, is located in an urban development-defining location, on the former fortification wall and it dictates the street pattern of the area. In 1916, 1920 and 1950-1951, extensions and renovations were carried out in the style of the original building. The extension of 1950-1951 concerns the rear part of the attached transverse wing. From 1926 to 1969, the National Training School was also housed in this building. During the war the building was used by the Germans as a Kriegslazaret. After the war, the building regained its original function. From 1946 the school was known as Coevorder Lyceum, since 1968 as the National School Community.
