Probably the most impressive building on the market is the Town Hall, built between 1377 and 1380. It is one of the oldest surviving German town hall buildings. The building, which has undergone enormous alterations and reconstructions over the centuries, has the shape of a semi-detached house with two rectangular buildings of equal size, each with a steep hipped roof.

The entire basement of the town hall once served the trade. In the semicircular hallway of the Town Hall, the stalls of the bakers, butchers, fur and cloth merchants found their place and protection. Today, the historic restaurant "Ratszeise" on the ground floor of the town hall invites you to linger.
The baroque central tower with the old astronomical art clock was built in 1755. The central figure of the art clock in the tower is the "Schnapphans",
also called "Hans von Jhene". The Schnapphans, who for centuries has failed to reach for a golden orb, counts as 'caput' to the 'Seven Wonders of Jena'. Next to the Schnapphans are an angel with a bell and a pilgrim with the conscious golden ball on the staff.

Jena's old town hall was first documented in 1365. The original construction date is unknown, but records show that the building took on its current form during a massive reconstruction in 1377.
At that time, the ground floor was used as a marketplace, while official business
was conducted in the town hall vestibule on the upper floor.
The Baroque tower with its distinctive clock was added in 1755. Miraculously, the building survived the massive bombing raids of World War II unscathed, making it one of the oldest surviving historic town hall buildings in Germany.
