In contrast to other, especially urban areas in the Republic, Drenthe had no specific orphanages for a long time. The only exception in the 17th and 18th centuries was the diaconie orphanage in Coevorden. The facade stone above the door of the house mentions the year 1690, but already in 1661 there was talk of an 'orphanage'. Moreover, this orphanage mainly owed its existence to the garrison stationed in Coevorden, which took care of a large number of soldier children who were left behind.
