In the 10th century Jelling was an important place for the Danish royal power. Here Gorm the Elder (died approx. 959) and his son Harald Bluetooth (King approx. 959 - approx. 987) created a memorial area, which, among other things, consisted of the two famous rune stones. Archaeological remains of a palisade have also been found; H. a kind of fence of large dimensions, made of oak poles and oak boards. The palisade framed the entire area. It was probably built in 968 when Harald Blåtand was King of Denmark. With the construction (2013) of long rows of concrete columns, the huge palisade was marked in the landscape.
