The historic area in Jelling is considered the cradle of the Danish monarchy. The complex consists of a number of remarkable sights and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was the residence of the pagan Viking prince Gorm the Old and his son Harald Bluetooth, who arguably called himself the first king of Denmark.

In the center of the area stands a stone church from the 11th century, with two very large burial mounds to the north and south of it. The two Jelling Stones, large boulders carved with runes, which are attributed to Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth, are also on display directly in front of the church.

The area attempts to illustrate the dimensions of the former residence, including through the use of stone. And right next door is a remarkable museum with many interactive exhibits. All in all, it's well worth a visit.
