The parish church is one of the oldest churches in Wels - it was first mentioned in 888. The building was demolished in the 13th century and a Romanesque basilica was built in its place. It was redesigned into a Gothic, three-aisled church, but Romanesque elements can still be seen today.

City parish church, Saint John, Wels

The parish church of Wels is one of the oldest churches in the Upper Austrian town of Wels. It is dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist.

The church was first mentioned on April 13, 888, when King Arnulf transferred the chaplain Zazco's fief in Wels as property. At that time it was still a chapel, which represented the core of the donation. In the centuries that followed, the church was one of the possessions of the Kremsmünster monastery.

During the 13th century this was demolished and replaced by a Romanesque basilica. In the 14th century it was redesigned into a Gothic, three-nave church, although Romanesque elements can still be found today. The cross vault also dates from this period.

The west tower, which is Romanesque on its lower floors, was raised in the first half of the 18th century and provided with an onion dome. The conversion of the tower and the west portal under Mayor Johann Paumgartner in 1731 and 1732 by Johann Michael Prunner, who also purchased a new tower clock and five new bells, is amply documented by invoices. The Linz bell founder Silvius Creuz received 2,000 guilders and 53 kreuzers for it. In the course of this redesign of the portal, three stone sculptures were set up, which represent Saints Sebastian, Michael and Rochus from left to right and probably come from the Linz sculptor Michael Herstorfer.

In the 19th century the church was renovated again to mark its 1000th anniversary. During the renovations, the church will be partially redesigned in a neo-Gothic style. The neo-Gothic style of the church can still be seen today on the facade of the nave. In 1958, during recent restorations, parts of the church were restored to their original condition. In addition to painting the nave, the organ was also renovated and the ribs on the side aisles repaired.

The Wels parish church is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Upper Austria. It is dedicated to St. John the Evangelist and is a listed building. It has an interesting history and rich furnishings that reflect different styles and eras. You can admire Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and neo-Gothic elements there, such as the west portal, the altars, the pulpit, the stained glass windows, the Stations of the Cross and the bells.

The Wels parish church is also a place of culture and faith. It belongs to the Wels deanery in the Diocese of Linz and regularly offers church services, concerts, exhibitions and other events. You can find out about the current dates on the Wels parish website.
