The city fortifications were built, apart from the older, Romanesque Nytstor
between Burgflecken and town at the beginning of the 14th century and gave the town with
its four gates (Brandenberger Tor, Nytstor, Dürener Tor and Zülpicher Tor) have a medieval character. The last three city gates mentioned are still preserved, but only part of the Nytstor is left. The city wall was originally 8 to 9 meters high and almost its entire course was reconstructed. It roughly encloses a rectangle 375 m long and 200 m wide.
Ten towers were included in the fortification. On the field side, a ditch was in front of the wall, in which a well donated water in rainy weather.

The Dürener Tor is a city gate in the east of Nideggen. It is located on the street "Im Altwerk".
The gate was built in the first third of the 14th century as part of the city fortifications. From 1583 the building fell into decay. In 1765 it was broken down to the basement. From 1892 to 1896 the upper floor was reconstructed. In 1949, the Dürener Tor was restored.

Nideggen is worthwhile as a nice rest area with nice restaurants. Already an ice cream complacent?
