Named after Lillie Hitchock Coit who bequeathed a large portion of her estate "to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved", Coit Tower is now one of the city's most famous landmarks.

Though you can drive to the tower, having a walk up the trademark steep streets of San Francisco is the best way experience Coit Tower.

Coit Tower stands atop Telegraph Hill in Pioneer Park, above San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. Designed by Arthur Brown, Jr., with assistance from Henry Howard, the tower was built between 1932 and 1933 in the Art Deco style. The interior is decorated with twenty-five frescoes painted by various artists between 1933 and 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). The murals cover more than 3,000 square feet of wall space in the tower and depict a common theme: Aspects of Life in California, 1934. The tower was dedicated to the volunteer firefighters who died in the five fires in San Francisco.
