Today we walked from a little below Passo Falzasego (free parking) up to Rifugio Averau. The path started quite steep, to get our heart pumping. We had our first rest at the lake which mirrors the mountains in the background, before continuing up the pass. Almost at the top there are a few very steep and rocky climbs, the kids loved these the most of the whole hike. At the top of the saddle, we had the option to return, or continue to Rifugio Averau. The hamburgers at Averau turned out to be irresistible, so we added aboudot 1½km to the total trail. Well rested we walked down the ski slope for a bit, the kids found out that descending is much harder than ascending. Luckily we found topics to talk about to distract them from the little fear that had crept up on them. The final descent is through pine forest, until you reach the sheep pastures. From there it is one more climb to reach the parking once more.

Beautiful forest walk up to the lower pass. Mostly wide gravel paths. Two short sections follow the mountain road where cars and bikes descend at high speed, the road must be crossed twice. Beautiful vista at the top. And get a warm belly at the Rufigio Passo Valparola. You can either hike the same route down, take the bus (€5pp to Sciaré), or continue the hike further up, before descending back to Sass Dlacia.
