Pier 39 in San Francisco is a popular tourist destination known for its lively atmosphere and unique attractions, including shops and restaurants on the water. One of its standout features is the large colony of California sea lions that began hauling out on the pier in September 1989. Originally using Seal Rock, the sea lions shifted to Pier 39 after the docks were renovated, providing large, open spaces for them to rest. Their presence quickly became a major attraction, with as many as 1,700 sea lions observed at once, although numbers fluctuate seasonally. These sea lions are now a major draw for visitors, who come from around the world to see them lounging on the docks and enjoy educational programs offered by the Sea Lion Center.
