The Karlsbrunnen is not named after Charlemagne, but the late Wendelstein forester Karl Lober, who originally created the fountain.
The water in the fountain comes from an overflow from one of the old sand pits that were created in the course of quartz sandstone quarrying in the Wendelstein quarries. "Presumably the miners used the spring water as drinking water in earlier times"
