"Danube and Main connected for shipping, a work by Carl the Great tries, started again by Ludwig I. King of Bavaria and completes MDCCCXLVI." - This inscription can be found on the canal monument in Erlangen Castle.

It is wonderful here along the Ludwig - Danube - Main - Canal, the "Old Canal". Whether on foot or by bike, pure relaxation and almost in the middle of the city.

The Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal had to overcome a height difference of 264 meters between the Danube and the Main with 100 locks: 80 m with 32 locks from Kelheim up to the apex, 184 m from there with 68 more locks down to Bamberg.

The 34.15 m long and 4.67 m wide locks each overcome a height of 2.30 to 3.20 meters. One chamber filling required up to 500 m3 of water. To save water, many locks could be shortened to 26.2 m with an intermediate gate. This was enough for the 24 m long standard barges, while long timber transports often completely filled the lock chamber.

Not only historically interesting but also something for the eye - it's worth incorporating the route into your tours from time to time
