In 1806, Herselt was struck by a village fire. Damage to the church proved to be limited. In 1872, the church was enlarged to accommodate the growing population, based on a design by Pieter Jozef Taeymans. In 1897, the church was again deemed too small. There was also a desire to widen the N19, for which purpose the church, except for the tower, was demolished between 1912 and 1916. A new church was built next to the site of the church's predecessor, incorporating the old tower. The old choir was also systematically demolished and rebuilt in its original form.
The church is built of brick and iron sandstone, with the tower constructed in the form of multi-layered slabs. The new church more or less resembled its demolished predecessor, but its orientation was shifted slightly north. The tower thus ended up next to the facade of the new church.
