For travellers on foot between Ambleside and Ullswater, the Scandale Pass is a much wilder and quieter option than joining the cars struggling up the Kirkstone Pass.

Four paths meet here: one from Ambleside, one from the northern end of Kirkstone, one from bulky Red Screes and one from Little Hart Crag, which belongs to the flailing eastern arm of the Fairfield massif, along with High Hartsop Dodd.

To the north west, just 131 feet (40 m) above the pass, is the small Scandale Tarn: an enticing prospect on a baking hot summer's day.
