Hikes to Stony Cove Pike take you to the highest point of a complex ridge system that towers over the eastern end of the Kirkstone Pass. Known to Wainwright baggers as Caudale Moor, this is a classic summit located beautifully amongst the Far Eastern Fells of Lakeland.

True to the character of the region, Stony Cove Pike is a rough, rounded, grassy fell with its flanks adorned by craggy outcrops. The path linking it to Thornthwaite Crag is exciting, steep and boasts a little bit of scrambling. From the summit, the view south down Troutbeck to Windermere is glorious, whilst Red Screes and the Fairfield group are seen splendidly across the Kirkstone Pass.

Walking routes to Stony Cove Pike begin from Hartsop, Troutbeck or the Kirkstone Pass, all of which are blessed with accommodation options. The termination of its northern arm, Hartsop Dodd, a Wainwright summit that stands sentinel above the village of the same name, can be claimed en route. Meanwhile, the overall ascent can be curtailed significantly by starting your walk from the Kirkstone Pass Inn.

Tips

  • This summit of Caudale Moor is named Stony Cove Pike and it is the Wainwright top of this 2,503-foot (763 m) Far Eastern Lake District fell. A whopping six ridges leave the summit of this fell in different directions and yet both times I've hiked this fell I've approached from Hartsop Dodd and left towards Thornthwaite Crag. I need to get more creative with my routes up here!
