Between the city of Delfzijl and the harbor, a dike (Dijkpromenade) of 750 meters long has been constructed to protect the city from seawater. Four passages have been made in the dike, including the Grote and the Kleine Waterpoort. The corridors can be closed with doors (denominations).

Delfzijl became a fortress town with 40 m wide canals, a rampart with five bulwarks, ring ditches and on the sea side there was a dike with wooden barriers.
The guns were mounted in depressions on the dike.
