The castle originally dates from the Middle Ages, but the building was razed to the ground during the siege of Leiden to prevent the Spaniards from settling there.
The well survived this destruction.
There was once a wrought iron construction on top but it has been lost over time.
For safety reasons, it now has a wooden lid with a grille.
