The hall gate used to stand here - one of the four city gates of Jena. A small bronze sculpture reminds of this historical location. One of the most important trade routes in the region ran through the Saaltor for centuries: through the ford of the Saale, it led up the Saalstrasse and on through the Johannisstrasse in the direction of Weimar and Erfurt. The Saalstrasse is one of the oldest streets in Jena. It was first mentioned in 1349 as "Saalgasse".
