The canal is an old drainage canal (from before 1250) and also a shipping route. The watercourse was created by connecting parts of different creeks through dug channels. In the course, partly straight and partly curvy, the history of its creation is easily recognizable. As a result of the inversion of the landscape, the water surface - formerly lower than the adjacent land - now lies between quays high above the adjacent polders.
