Schillerplatz actually owes its name to Napoleon. Because he “created” the Kingdom of Bavaria and is responsible for the small German states and thus for the Germans’ lack of national feeling. Friedrich Schiller, on the other hand, was the most German of all poets, so a long pageant was organized in Bamberg to mark his 100th birthday. The population took active part. As a worthy conclusion, a Schiller oak tree was planted on the Schiller meadow. And at the next meeting (November 29, 1859) the city magistrate decided to rename the Theaterplatz to Schillerplatz. Which was definitely a political message.
