    Vauban invented the barracks principle to separate civilians from military personnel, who until then had been housed with the locals. He planned four barracks, all located along the perimeter of the ramparts. Each was named after a distinguished officer: Suzonni, Serano, Berckheim, Abatucci. They could accommodate two infantry regiments and two cavalry regiments (three of which still exist).
