The monk's bastion is one of the seven bastion towers of the city fortifications of Bautzen. It was built around 1324 as a rectangular tower.

The bastion should be defended by the monks in the event of war. For this purpose, the building was connected to the Franciscan monastery from 1433 by a corridor. The connecting passage across Heringstrasse was demolished in 1563. Sewers found during the renovation of the building in the 1990s also testify to the important role played by the monks' bastion in the sewage disposal of the southern part of the medieval old town.
