The Nicolai Tower was the last tower of the city fortifications and was completed in 1522. It towers over the northern city gate and, together with the fortified church of St. Nicolai, protected one of the most important trade routes of the time, the Via Regia.

The date of construction is not documented, only that the wooden upper part of the roof from 1522 was replaced by a stone upper part. In year
In 1614 the tower burned down due to a lightning strike and in 1678 it was fitted with a Welsh hood. It lost its hood due to war damage, and it kept the current cone-shaped roof.
