The oldest indoor swimming pool in Belgium is also the youngest: it was thoroughly restored in 2001, so that today the beautiful Art Deco decoration is more beautiful than ever.

The swimming pool also retains its public function as a bathhouse: those who live in a cramped area can enjoy an extensive bath here.

In the lounge bar "Au bain" on the first floor you can enjoy a beautiful view of the swimming pool or the marina.

It was designed in 1886 by E. De Vigne, who designed one of the earliest concrete experiments in the city with the concrete tub and accompanying washbasins.

The majestic interior has served as a film set several times. When the Van Eyck swimming pool was built, going to the swimming pool was a very prestigious affair. Free bathing had been banned in Ghent since 1840 and an entrance ticket soon cost as much as an evening of opera. When there was no splashing in the water, the pool served as a concert hall. Especially for the occasion, the cockpit was covered with a stage.

It was not until after the Second World War that swimming in the swimming pool became an affordable initiative.

The textile empire of Ferdinand Lousbergs aan de Reep was used to heat the water. Warm water was transported to the swimming pool via an underground pipe system.
